Ransom lets you put a price on the apps that take your time. You choose which apps to guard and which movement to pay with, and the app blocks those apps until you have completed the reps. It uses Apple's Screen Time and Family Controls to apply the block, and your device's camera or pedometer to count movement.
Health and safety. Ransom is a habit and screen-time tool. It is not a medical device and gives no medical advice. Exercise carries risk of injury. Consult a doctor before starting any exercise programme, particularly if you are pregnant, have a heart condition, an injury, or any medical condition affected by physical activity. Stop immediately if you feel pain, dizziness or discomfort. You exercise entirely at your own risk, and you are responsible for judging what is safe for you. Never use the app while driving or anywhere that doing reps would be unsafe.
The app counts reps using on-device pose detection and your phone's pedometer. Counting depends on lighting, camera position, clothing and how the movement is performed, and it will sometimes miscount in either direction. Calorie figures are rough estimates for general interest only and are not a measurement. Nothing the app reports should be relied on for medical, fitness or nutritional decisions.
App blocking is provided through Apple's Family Controls. It depends on iOS behaving as documented and on the permissions you grant. It can be switched off in iOS Settings at any time, and it may not block every route to every app or website. Ransom is a deliberate obstacle, not a security control, and should not be relied on as one.
Please do not attempt to reverse engineer, decompile or interfere with the app, use it unlawfully, or use it in a way that puts you or anyone else at risk.
We may update, change or discontinue the app or any feature at any time. We aim to keep it working but do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error free, and it may stop working if Apple changes the APIs it depends on.
The app is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind to the fullest extent permitted by law. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any injury, loss or damage arising from your use of the app, including from exercising, from reliance on rep or calorie figures, or from apps being blocked or failing to be blocked. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of that province have exclusive jurisdiction.
